Why is martial arts such a big competition?

Because each one of them have their own strengths. Whem the MMA and UFC were first started it was the hopes or idea that they would take different types of fighters from all over the place and test out as to what fighting method was the most dominant. But what they found out is that because they had so many different techniques and purposes it was hard to come up with a fighting rule system for the refs to inforce. So the result was everyone kind of had to learn many different fighting styles to be successful and the organizations kind of picked and chose what would be legal and what wouldn't from each fighting style. When in the real world/ fight where there are no refs these people are going to use anything and everything they were trained to do to be successful. None of them are pry the most elite, some figthing styles may indeed be better but the real question is what fighting style do you like, what is easiest/enjoyable for you to learn, and be successful with. Forget what everyone else says of what is the best, find what is best for you to learn, or if you just like watching, look at what types of take downs and attacks look most interesting to you.

Because people have turned martial arts into a sport.

If you pay close attention, you'll notice it's mostly immature and inexperienced little kids who do the most arguing over styles, the rest are people taken in by the "sports" connotation that the martial arts are given by much of the world.

In any sport you see all kinds of competition and resentment. Whole entire towns, and even whole states here in the US, show complete hatred and contempt for each other, total strangers, for no other reason than a sports team, even leading into riots and lawbreaking. People are insane, and it's this type of insanity that gets put into the martial arts scene as well. It's disgraceful and completely bastardizes the martial arts.

Luckily, despite this, there are still plenty of logical practitioners out there that know better. Just ignore the ignorant kids like you do internet trolls. Arguing only feeds their insanity; explaining anything, even helpfully, works no better! Ignore them and let them figure it out.

Do I ever agree! Unfortunately, most people are not tolerant of things they do not understand or know little about. Uncertainty is scary, so we seek to control everything. It is difficult to assess something you know nothing about, so if you talk it down it mentally convinces someone that they are still in charge and on top of everything and then in their mind they are still in control. It's an insecurity issue made worse by people who refuse to learn and driven by the media that you always have to be the best and noone can be better than you, rather than an attitude that you improved and bettered yourself and be content with that.

The people who argue are the ones who are insecure about their own studies.

Why does every one argue about what martial art is better and who was the best martial artist. We should just appreciate every great martial artist and have fun training martial arts our selves. Martial artists should be in unity with each other and not arguing about which style is best. Do you agree?
