What's the difference between mma and taekwondo?

One is pure violence and the other is just a sport. Neither are martial arts.

Really, you're asking this?

MMA is an organized sport spanning over 20 years of history. It was a sport involving multiple combat sports rules to fit in a more fulfilling sport other than Boxing, Karate and Kickboxing at the time.

Taekwondo is a name given to multiple martial arts that is derived from primarily Korean Martial Arts aswell as Judo, Karate, Boxing and Jiu-jitsu. There are multiple organizations that involve Military education, Self-Defense and competitive sport. It is credited to bringing kickboxing into popularity in 1968, due to Karate competitions being non-contact at the time, and the few who did allow contact were not allowed to kick.

Taekwondo teaches self-defense, sport and military combat. MMA is an organized sport involving two fighters with similar or different backgrounds.

One has a certification body and headquarters. The other has no official headquarters or certifying authority.

One is strictly a competitive sport. The other is also, but, wasn't always so.

One is an Olympic sport. The other isn't.

One advances its members by way of colored belts. The other doesn't use belts.

One wears a sort of traditional uniform. The other typically trains in street clothes.

One is distinctly of Korean origin. The has no distinct original to any particular style or country.

One is merely a sport. And one is self defense or a sport itself.

MMA is basically Martial Art's retarded little brother.

Why couldn't you just research this on your own? There's too much to write about this.

Obviously you've never seen either so why does it matter?
