What is the best martial art?

Posted at: 2015-05-07
The best martial art is the broadest one that has moves suitable for everybody. It's a cop out to say there's no best one. There has to be a best one or ones. Very few people are even halfway qualified to try to answer such a question as this, so pretenders give it a whirl. Hung Gar is a candidate for best martial art, because it combines so many diverse styles, mainly the founder's Shaolin Tiger, and his wife's Shaolin Crane plus some of the other three traditional Shaolin animals and some Taoist 5 Element Fist. That's about as diverse as you can be in Chinese styles, and the Korean styles and Japanese copy the Chinese.

This question is asked SO MANY times! And the answer is ALWAYS the same!

There isn't a best. If there was everyone would do it. What would be the point in taking any other art?

There are only better students and better instructors. It's up to the martial artist to make their art work.

styles are made to adapt to your body type

There is no best style.

They will all work as long as you train right and have a good instructor.

Your size, body type and sex have nothing to do with the style you want to choose. People that think that your size and body type determine the style know little to nothing about martial arts

Most people will tell you there style is the best or they heard such and such is a great style,

The style is not important, what matters is how good your instructor is and how you train. The style is secondary, they all have there pro's and con's there are no superior styles.

If you have an instructor that can’t teach you how to fight, regardless of the style, what good would it do you?

Choose a school with a good instructor in the end that’s all that matters, that and how you train.

Its the person that has the ability to fight not the style

The best one is the one that is best for YOU. Obviously boxing and BJJ will work better for someone with a lot of muscle and won't be the best thing for someone who has a more lean and flexible build. For someone with a more lean and flexible build something like karate or wing chun would work better for them. Ju Jutsu and Sumo is obviously better for someone who has a lot of body mass. But no matter what martial art anyone does as long as they work hard and have a good teacher they will become good fighters. There is no best martial art, just best martial artists.

Yes. There actually is one. I like Sandra's answer. There has to be one or a few that's better.

It's called Honsha Kuntao jitsu. It teaches you headbutts, elbow, knee strikes, finger mesh + eye gouging, stomps, arm entanglement, efficient punches that doesn't break someone's hand, kicks that are faster and wastes no energy, sweeps, locks that immediately dislocate joints upon contact, chokes, grappling (throwing + ground), infighting + weapon works + multiple opponents.

It's like a mixture of escrima, traditional koryu uchinadi, goju ryu etc. Which are very complete and self defense oriented arts themselves.

It's quite reclusive and few people in Mariana teaches it.

I have a friend who was stopped by a mugger and his training really helped. Basically...he side stepped a grab and turned the attacker around.

Then he shot 2 laser beams through the mugger's head.

Edit: Wait. So sorry I forgot to tell you, just a minute ago the senpai of Honsha Kuntao Jitsu challenged the master of Ameri do te. It was real intense and the fight wen on for 3 seconds before the Ameri do te teacher broke the guy's arm. The master of HKJ came too but he didn't last longer than 3 seconds neither.

If there were only one which was the best, what would justify why so many of them exist? It's like what is the best flavor of Ice Cream... once on flavor excels at being better than any other flavor why would any of the other flavors still exist in the world.

I recommend you find an instructor which you trust and have confidence in teaching you how to be the best you can be. When you find him, or her, then you've found your best style.

I would simply say that the one you master is the best martial art.
