What if the Mets kept these players?

If you transplanted the statistics for Reyes, Beltran, Rodriguez and Dickey's for the stats for Ruben Tejada, LaTroy Hawkins, Lucas Duda and Dillon Gee... then yes, the Mets would be a better team.

Specifically, they would be just under 5 games better (4.8 WAR for Reyes, Beltran, Dickey, K-Rod vs. 0.0 WAR for Tejada, Hawkins, Duda and Gee).

However, you cannot just transplant stats from one team to another like that. Players would not have exactly the same statistics just based on the competition, the parks, the relationship with managers/coaches/media, and the clubhouse environment.

Besides, the Mets wouldn't have Zack Wheeler if it weren't for the Beltran trade, they likely would not have signed Marlon Byrd were Carlos Beltran on the team, and they would have neither John Buck nor Travis D'Arnud if they hadn't traded RA Dickey.

Back to reality: I don't see them being any good anytime soon. Their young talent looks awful, outside of Harvey/Wheeler. Duda, Tejada, Davis, Nieuwenhuis, Lagaris... none of them look especially promising.

They would be in financial disarray. Part of the reason they didn't resign Reyes was they could only offer him so much. Beltran was actually not doing well in New York and couldn't really afford him either. K-Rod really dropped off after they let him go and they got a lot for RA Dickey.

Reality, it's going to be 4-5 years. Harvey and Wheeler have the potential to be the best 1-2 punch. However, the offense is AWFUL.

They wouldn't be much better, if at all. Dickey isn't having nearly as good of a season as he did last year. K-Rod is good, but closers aren't that hard to find -- Bobby Parnell has been solid this year. Beltran can still hit, but he's 36 years old and if they still had him they wouldn't have Zack Wheeler. Reyes would be an upgrade at SS but that's about it.

Not a guarantee, because the only one who has been polaying regularlly is Beltran.

Next year they'll be better, more pitching on the way. They have to win a Championship between 2015 and 2017, after that they lose their window of opportunity with Wright being past his prime.

My guess is they win it all in 2016.

10-15 years, not in the near future.

They weren't good with those players in the past, chances are they wouldn't be good with them now.

I'm a Yankees fan but just wondering, if the Mets were able to keep Jose Reyes, Carlos Beltran, K-Rod and RA Dickey, would they be better this year?

Now lets get back to reality, how long do you think it will be before the mets are good? V
