What are ninjas and what do they do?

"Old school" ninjutsu is dead. What the ninja did back then was kill samurai and feudal lords.

In todays time ninjutsu is taught as a brutal martial art with some emphasis on killing an opponent. Like True Israeli Krav Maga. However, it has also gained a huge false fan base and now 85% of bujinkan ninjutsu is a fraud.

THAT is how ninjutsu is supposed to be taught.

For a definitive answer, get Stephen Turnbull's excellent history..."Ninja, the true story of Japan's warrior cult".

The proper term is "shinobi", by the way. Essentially, they were guerilla warriors. They evolved in poorer provinces like Iga which could not field large, fully-equipped Samurai armies.

So, they adopted "irregular" warfare techniques and practiced sabotage, assassination, intelligence gathering, and so forth.

Much of the history of Ninjutsu we see portrayed on TV and in the Movies is entirely fanciful, made up from myths and legends.

Ninjas were practitioners of ninjutsu, they did covert operations during the feudal Japan.

They don't exist anymore, only in movies.

For the most part, ninja were covert agents (many were "agents for hire") who specialized in unorthodox warfare.

They specialized in stealth -- getting in, performing their mission and getting out again without detection.

If you wanted to be a modern day ninja, you would probably have to learn how to silently assassinate somebody, pick pockets, break and enter into a building without any alarms going off, safe cracking and similar skills.

Ninjas are just these really cool guys that you might not wanna f****k with.

they poop good

I understand they were like fired samurai during the feudal Japan times. I wonder if there were ninjas after the tokagawa took over

but im mainly asking, do they exist today and what do they do now? Japan has its own special operations now and I dont think their shinobis lol.
