Should the Tampa Bay Rays relocate to Montreal?

Imagine the AL East with Montreal

Yankees, Redsox, Orioles, BlueJays, Expos.

sweet!

The city is proposing to build a 38,000 seat baseball stadium downtown, and MLB is listening, but it may be a number of years away. But if MLB wasn't interested they would have never scheduled the 2 exhibition games between the Mets and Blue Jays that drew 100,000 fans for the 2 games. That was the first step towards something possibly happening in the future.

Only if there is someone willing to buy the Rays and built a ballpark in Montreal. Of course, the team has a lease agreement with the city of St. Petersburg until 2027, so they can't even move within the Tampa area much less out of the country. For that to happen, that team must fold.

As for the attendance, it went downhill after the 94 lock out. The best players the Expos had were gone, bad management with Brochu and Loria and the promise of a new ball park never came, it was to depressing and painfull for anyone to watch. Montreal is no colder than Boston or Detroit in spring and fall.

If the Rays move to Montreal, I think MLB would make a change for the new team to play in the NL.

No. The Expos left Montreal because of a lack of attendance.

Montreal would support the Rays the same way Tampa did,

or didn't.

Expos left because they wanted a new billion dollar stadium and cities outside the US don't provide corporate welfare. It's the same reason why the rays would leave Tampa. However teams don't need any fans in the stands to make a profit, that's just an excuse to extort a new stadium. That way the team doesn't look greedy.

If the Rays move to Montreal and just play in Olympic Stadium, then they're going to go from a team with a terrible stadium and horrible attendance to a team with a terrible stadium, horrible attendance AND cold weather.

Either way nobody is going to the games. In Montreal or Tampa.

Montreal couldn't support the team they had. There's no reason to go back there and repeat the same mistake.

It may happen, but not in the immediate future, and the team would need to be an AL franchise to rival Toronto.

No. Canada should have her own league. The Blue Jays should be moved to another city--Anchorage, Alaska.

Montreal has proven they are not a baseball town. I don't see the point.
