Should i take my taekwondo belt test?

You should only test if your instructor recommended you for testing.

If your technique is sloppy you already know you aren't ready. There should be no hurry to test or get a belt. What good is a belt if the quality, skill, etc doesn't match or exceed the rank? It would have no meaning.

No, you should not test. Brown belt is generally considered a senior rank in most schools.

Your techniques ought not be messy, nor with low kicks. You should have some self-respect and test when you know you are ready. And that is at least when your forms aren't messy and you can kick higher. Among other things, too.

There is no hurry - it's a lifelong endeavor. Besides, what good is a belt if you don't do well on your test?

The other posters especially the first one covered all the ground I would have posted about. I am purple right now and have been for extra months. Don't do something you are nobelts comfortable or ready for. I am not physically ready to enter advanced/senior ranks, which is where you seem to be.

If you are feeling sloppy, see what your instructor says. Ask for some one on one time because isn't your school supposed to help you train? At least ask experienced black belt or someone who is a candidate to help you with what you are having difficulty with. Again, it's not a race to advance- I learned this the hard way myself.

What kind of school are you in that you, the student, determine when you test? If your teacher doesn't care and you don't know if you should test how on earth are we supposed to give you sound advice since we do not know you from Adam nor do we know what the standards in your school are.

Besides, martial arts is not a race to get to black belt first. If it is in your school then you might want to reevaluate your training. If you are getting sloppier with practice rather than better where is your teacher in all this ? Doesn't he help you BEFORE you test rather than let it out on you during your test?

You also don't say when your belt test is. Can't you spruce things up a bit? If you are practicing real hard and are getting worse maybe you should reevaluate how you practice. If you practice things and just slop through them it's not practicing. That's a waste of time. When you practice you need to make corrections and improvements and unless you do it is not practicing. Just repeating all your mistakes over and over will eventually make you very good at your mistakes. Practice does not make perfect. It only makes permanent. Perfect permanent practice makes perfect.

No, you clearly said it's sloppy. You're missing something. You are doing it too fast. It takes time, nothing comes in a snap. You'll have to break down what the hell you're doing as "training" and do it again. Sorry if I am being strict or in this case "mean" but you want help. I give you help.

Alright, so do whatever you're doing, roundhouse kick for example. You remember what to do slowly right? Raise leg up, make it parallel to the floor, and snap out at solar plexus level. Do it slowly, hold the wall if you have to. Keep your legs extend as long as you can, push yourself (it's a metaphor) a little when you do it like... 10 times for each leg. Do that for a few days, then kick fast and see how improved you are.

To summarize what I just said: "Do everything slowly, see what you're doing wrong, fix it. Then preform it fast"

ive been working really hard to get my brown belt since i was away the last belt test and i was behind my friend. ive been doing my push ups, sit ups, forms, kicks, etc but the more i practice, i start to notice how sloppy it is. my teacher is very strict and can be sorta cruel at belt tests. i really want to advance to my next belt but i dont know if i should do it. my forms are messy, my kicks are too low, hes making us go all the way down for push ups ( which is pretty hard DX ).

should i go and at least try or not go and get ready for the next belt test?
