Should I buy my own equipment?

I would recommend you get your own gloves, hand wraps (three pair, actually), shin guards, and mouthpiece (at least two, they're easy to lose). If you are male, get a cup with at least two jocks. Why the extra jocks and wraps? They get sweaty and stinky fast, so having extras gives you something to use until you can wash the LAST one you used.

I would consult with the gym about what their equipment requirements are, as some are rather strict on glove size and shin guard padding. If you can't find a local shop that sells them, try sites like Title, Windy, Budovideos, and more. Shop around prices for the same item, but definitely don't skimp on glove cost. A good pair should last you a while and protect your hands. Word of warning: "Everlast" has gone to rather cheap construction in recent years, in my experience. Title has served me well, and I hear Hayabusa may have the best quality gloves 'round.

Buy your own.

Excellent answer from callsignfuzzy.

Look: The stuff will get sweaty and dirty. Why mess with other people's sweat?

You'll need a minimum of a rashguard or Muay Thai shirt (whatever they're called), a pair of Muay Thai shorts, a cup, a mouthpiece, two sets of gloves (one MMA-style, one padded like boxers use. I'd suggest you buy a couple of shirts and shorts.

There are plenty of good online stores that sell them. Just browse around. After you've identified the brands you want, look for the best prices.

Incidentally, pay attention to the sizing charts for Muay Thai clothes. Most are sized for Thai fighters, and so are much smaller than sizing for Americans. Example: My son is 5'2" tall and competes at 135 lbs. He wears a LARGE in shorts.

Hope that helps.

from my experience loaner gym equipment rarely get clean which give it a fowl smell and can give you infections. Gloves are the worst as many are not easy to clean. I would recommend getting your own stuff.

Different type of training methods calls for different types of equipments. I would just wait for the class and find out what they are doing before purchasing any equipment. If you have to purchase it right away I would purchase similar equipment as your classmates.

Buy some good equipment, it will last you very long, also, ask yourself, do you want other peoples sh!t stains on your hands, their sweat?

So I'm gonna start Muay Thai training soon and I'm wondering if I should buy my own gloves and stuff or just use what they have? If I should buy my own stuff what should I get and where is the best place to buy from?
