Is blocking ineffective?

Is trying to use blocks in an attack largely ineffective. Someone said this in a forum and I disagree what do you guys think?

to block means to stop something, which uses a lot of energy on your part. it is to perry, redirect, trap, strike.

karate has no blocks, the term uke which everyone translates into block means to receive. what we refer to as blocks are not blocks they are the end points of the technique. what is actually happening in between the start and end of the technique whether it be a perry followed by a strike, or a break, etc. but most people can't see past the finish of the technique and forget about the rest

That depends on what you mean by blocking. If you mean blocking like they do in boxing and MMA where you simply stop the punch with your elbows then yes it's effective. It doesn't have to be with gloves on. Even in real life if someone punches you straight in the elbow I promise you that you won't feel a thing but they will feel it. A lot.

There are other types of blocking where they try to grab the arm mid punch, if you know what I mean. Now that is next to impossible. That is very ineffective. There simply is not enough time to grab someone's arm, slip to the side, do a move or punch him.

The is a problem that most people have, if it is illegal in a tournament they begin to believe that it doens not work. personally I love "Hard-blocks." This is when you try to break the arm or leg that is attempting to strike. I know that few tournaments allow these types of techniques. If you are punched you do not block with your forearm but with the two knuckls next to your thumb. It is a lot easier to do than people think and I recommend everyone try it with the person punching wearing a shinguard over his arm for his protection. I also like to put the olecranon process in the way of a punch so that the fist is hurt

For kicks I like the 12-6 elbow or a bottom fist at the ankle in an attempt to cause what is called a footballer's fracture. If you try these always wear a shin guard so not to damage the target.

Blocking isn't ineffective, but it's less preferred to simply not being in a position to be hit. Clearly, if you can stop a strike from hitting you, you're doing your job right, but it's better to not be in a position where the opponent has the option of hitting you, or where you have to tie up one of your limbs for defense.

Don't block attacks, counters or dodges. Blocking is rarely used at all unless if it's a surprise attack.

Do not ever Block too much.the core theory of the block is find the way to attack,If u find the way,Why u'll block..????

Looks like you've been watching too many krav maga videos lol
