Is Bobby Abreau a hall of famer?

Abreu is a fun case, because he's "so close" to being a HOFer on a lot of ways to judge a HOFer, but never really cleared them.

His HOF Moniter score is 98, where 100 is a likely HOFer; his HOF Standards score is 54, where a typical HOFer is 50. Both metrics were created by looking at who was in the HOF and figuring out why they got there. He "almost" had 1500 runs, "almost" had 2500 hits, "almost" had 300 home runs, "almost" had 400 stolen bases, "almost" had a career batting average of .300, "almost" had a career OBP of .400 (in fact he had both after the 2008 season)...

I would say that, had Bobby Abreu played in the pre-Steroid Era days, he likely would have gotten in. Writers used to love seasons where a player had 100 runs, 100 RBI, a .300 BA, and Abreu had twelve seasons he did at least one of those. He had five 100 run/100 RBI seasons, and was "so" close to having two more, and writers "loved" that kind of stuff.

But he played when he did. Considering he didn't get much MVP support, wasn't considered a brilliant defender, only made two All Star Games and wasn't "considered" by many to be a HOFer when he played (which is entirely subjective, and is how future generations say, "How the fudge is Rabbit Maranville in the Hall of Fame?!"), I'd say he doesn't have much of a chance.

Edit: The man sure could get on base like a Hall of Famer; Baseball-Reference.com lists him as 77th all time in OBP, and the "only" eligible player ranked ahead of him with at least 2000 hits who isn't in the Hall of Fame or still on the ballot is John Olerud.

Maybe, but I would say long run no. Not the "Hall of Reliable and Consistently Productive".

Basically 15 seasons. Averaged about 19 HR, 96R, 90RBI, 27 SB. Was pretty dominant for 12 of those.

It's just harder to get in now.

That's an interesting question. I would put Abreu in the same category as Bernie Williams. I would say that Williams was better both offensively and defensively. Their stats are pretty close. As a Yankee fan I would love to see Bernie make the HOF but I think he falls just a little short. Very good but not great. Abreu had a very good career but not a great one. The other thing working against him is the fact that he never got a ring. Bernie has 4 and still doesn't make it.

No he isnt. There isnt a statistical measure to being a hall of famer, theres no special cut off. You look a guys and ask, watching this guy play, was he the best or one of the best players in baseball?

The answer to that is no. He was a good player, but nothing ever made him one of the best and thats what the Hall is, the best of the best.

Another one of those many very good MLB players that comes up short of HOF quality.

consistent and productive are not adjectives to describe a Hall of Famer. You need the WOW! factor. he doesn't have that. Nope.

I think not! I would like as it is Venezuelan, but their numbers were not enough to be Hall of Fame.

I think that while he was a very good player i don't think he was an immortal player.

* Abreu * and yes, he can go to the HOF, after paying general admission.

Not even close

.292/.386/.477, 129 OPS+, 2437 Hits, 565 2B's, 287 HR's, 1441 Runs, 1349 RBI's, 399 SB's, 1456 BB's, 59 3B's

2-time AS, 7-time MVP vote-getter, 60.4 Career WAR, HR Derby Champ, 4-year peak WAR is 25.4, 1-time SS, 1-time GG (RF)

Was a very consistent, reliable productive outfielder. Was under-rated as a complete player.

Average stat line was: .292/.396/.477 with 20 HR's, 92 RBI's, 28 SB, 39 2B's, 99 Runs, 168 Hits, 100 BB's.

What do you think?

I think he may be a borderline cast that get's in but he was never truly extraordinary as measured by his peers and the fans (MVP voting--highest finish was 12th, All-star games--2 appearances) but today and in the future may better appreciate for being a complete player (average 20 HR, 28 SB a season) also the whole walk movement will appreciate his average .396 OBP and 100 BB's a year.

What do you think? The bottom-range of WAR in the Hall is usually 50. He has 60, so he beat that.

PED's have another side, where there are some people who are presumed guilty and others are presumed innocent. This is very hazy and basically impossible to distinguish. Even though he doesn't appear to be a juicer and his numbers show little fluctuation it's impossible to prove either way.

I feel like he was never appreciated because he never had juiced arms or look (even though hit 42 HR's most ever in HR derby). Anyways, thoughts?

no. he needs to be duly elected.
