Help with choosing a suitable martial arts?

Posted at: 2015-05-07
Between Taekwondo, Judo , Jujitsu, Aikido, Muay Thai. Which is more suitable for a 15 year old teen.

Thanks In Advance

As stated you must first decide what do you want to learn (a sport or self defense). Then you need to find the right instructor that can help you reach your personal goals.

In your list you mentioned muay thai. It is a sport, not a martial art. You learn to compete and win/lose competitions. Tae kwon do today is often a sport however there are some that do actually teach self defense. Jujitsu not to be confused wit jiu jitsu is a martial art. It is used for self defense. Judo like tkd is mostly taught today as a sport. But there are some school that teach self defense application. Finding these school might be difficult. Aikido is for self defense.

You must visit several schools after you determine your goals. Observe the classes. If possible visit all of the schools multiple times. Afterwards choose the best instructor and one that will help you reach your goals.

There is no best art. There is no best art based upon your age, gender, or size. There are better instructors. There are better students. There are school that focus on competing. There are school that focus on self defense. There are schools that compete and teach self defense, All school are not equal.

What are your goals? What do you want to do?

Taekwondo put's a-lot of focus on kicks and is primarily known for just that. Good taekwondo is hard to come by and a-lot of schools are mcdojos. It's a good art though.

Judo is primarily about throwing your opponent around like a ragdoll. Good defense skills for fighting bigger or taller opponents.

Jujitsu - Groundgame, throws, sweeps, strikes, locks, etc. Mostly known for groundgame.

Aikido - Using the opponents energy and movement against them. Redirecting an attack and taking them down.

Muay Thai - Punches, kicks, knees, elbows, clinch. Great art, mostly used in a sport setting, usually hard and demanding training.

What do you want to do? What can you afford?

15 year olds practice all kinds of martial arts. You need to decide hard art vs soft art. Of that judo, jujitsu, and aikido go hand in hand, they are all of the same family tree and are considered soft arts (not to be taken as in lightness or effectiveness but use of force). Karate and muay Thai are "hard(striking) arts". Jujitsu is Japanese grappling arts, joint locks, holds, throws act. Decended from the battlefield kumuichi(grappling) arts of fuedal japan(samurai), modern jujitsu being most greatly influenced by the peaceful Edo period which focused more on restraining/arresting and self defense tactics based around the wearing of kimono in casual life Japan. Judo is a modern sport form of this type of jujitsu (very affective defense because of sport training). There is a difference between Brazilian Jiu-jitsu(an offshoot of Judo) and what is commonly termed " jujitsu ". Aikido is a style of jujitsu that has less in common with sport judo and bjj.

You need to determine what it is you want out of it first. Sport and competition or self defense. They are not the same and the training is very different and so is your mindset. Sports you square up and exchange techniques until a judges stops the match, you line up again and go again. In self defense this will get you hurt.

You narrowed it down and have listed several. All of them can be taught for self defense but most of the times martial arts are taught for sport. Schools that teach self defense are just a little harder to find. You need to find out which schools in your area teach what.

Then you need to narrow it down to which one is the best teacher. The teachers can not all be equally good.

Unfortunately that gives the burden of choosing back to you but in all fairness to just tell you a style and you go and your teacher is not good but the teacher next door who teaches another style is awesome then we wouldn't give you good advice. Bottom line, it is not the styles that determine which is best for you. Martial arts is just the tool. It is always the person using the tool that makes the difference.

You need to go shopping and visit all the schools, watch the classes and the students because this is what you will look like if you train there, ask questions of teachers and students, take some free trial classes and get a good feel. Then you decide. This is tedious but can safe a lot of disappointment down the road when you spent a few years in a school and find out that it is not for you. I have gone through my share of schools unfortunately and I never once left because I didn't like the martial art style. So pick the teacher.

Muay Thai is a martial sport not a martial art.

There is no best style.

They will all work as long as you train right and have a good instructor.

Your size, body type and sex have nothing to do with the style you want to choose. People that think that your size and body type determine the style know little to nothing about martial arts

styles are made to adapt to your body type

Most people will tell you there style is the best or they heard such and such is a great style,

The style is not important, what matters is how good your instructor is and how you train. The style is secondary, they all have there pro's and con's there are no superior styles.

If you have an instructor that can’t teach you how to fight, regardless of the style, what good would it do you?

Choose a school with a good instructor in the end that’s all that matters, that and how you train.

Its the person that has the ability to fight not the style

If you want to build up power and fitness, while using all eight limbs choose muay thai.

If you want the ability to defend against much bigger opponents choose judo.

If you like the idea of plenty of armlocks, strangled and ground techniques go for jujitsu.

Want to be more cardio, flexible and kicking then do taikwondo.

I don't know anything about aikido really..

Fifteen year old teenagers can be found studying each of the martial ways you listed.

The more important question would be what do you personally wish to learn and accomplish with any martial art you might choose to study?

Some have sport applications and others don't....

Im also 15 and have been doing muay thai for a year and its amazing! Great sport and you will get a lot fitter!

Well I think Wushu is the best one, but from your list I guess Taekwondo will suit you more as a 15 year-old kid.

Don't try wrestling cuz wrestling is for gay people

Between Taekwondo, Judo , Jujitsu, Aikido, Muay Thai. Which is more suitable for a 15 year old teen.

The one with the best teacher.
