Good self defense school?

Well, you kind of forced him to give you a timeline, so I'm not going to hold that against him. But in general if belts are based on time rather than skill acquired, then you are in the wrong place.

Also I'm concerned about his 7th degree black belt. 9th is the highest level you can reach traditionally, and if he is 7th degree he should be very high in level and position in the organization. Either that or he's in a smaller organizations that promotes their members very quickly(a sign of mcdojo). Either way I'd be wary of high degrees unless they really look the part.

Well either way, try other places as well and just go with the best place possible. Even if the place ends up being a mcdojo if that's the best place that you can get to, then that's the place you need to train.

I recommend Tae Bo.

Kajukenbo.

Belts don't mean anything if you can't do it.

Throw a link to the website!

I'm thinking of signing up. I took two free lessons and liked it. I asked how long it would take to get a black belt, not because I'm in s hurry, but find out if this is a mcdojo I hear about all the time. He said about 4 years depending on my natural ability and how much I practice outside of class. I would take 4 one hour classes per week. The schools primary focus is taekwondo but they also throw in some hapkido, kickboxing, and a lot of boxing (one day a week is entirely dedicated to boxing). The guy is a 7th degree black belt and I think the website said he has been training for over 35 years. Does this seem like a good school?
