Do you use Freestanding Punch / Kick Bags?

How efficient is it?

This one used a Century Wave, with a 250 lb bottom, however, even the instruction that came with it warn the user not to strike or kick too hard as it will fall right over if you punch or kick through it. Such is better than nothing but not much better.

A hanging bag would be better if you have an appropriate and safe place to hang such and a partner with a good body shield that can move in unexpected ways is even better than a bag (until they get tired of receiving and stop playing...LOL).

Kick boxa.

I use both.

My personal favorite is a BOB XL with the base full of concrete. It weighs over 300 lbs and unless I front kick it, side kick, or throw a stepping elbow, it doesn't fall over and is very sturdy.

I can also practice precision punching and utilize different technique.

But, I like the hanging bag for the sway, so I can utilize my foot movement and tai sabaki.

I thoroughly enjoy both and I have never had a problem with the BOB for over 3 yrs. It has held up against extreme amounts of abuse.

In short I use a certain bag for different technique.

UPDATE VIDEOS:

it depends

Not really. I prefer a hanging one. They are not efficient. You can't really hit them hard if you are an adult and can generate a little power with your strikes. They tip over too easy if hit hard and the higher you hit the easier they tip. Kicks to the head (just for the exercise of it) are almost impossible to practice on one of those.

If you fill them with water they will leak after they tip over a few too many times. The base will usually split somewhere and your bag will leak. Filling the base with sand will keep the bag from peeing all over your floor but if it leaks sand it is an abrasive and will ruin any finish you may have on your floor including making holes in your carpet over a period of time.

They are better than nothing but if you can choose between it and a hanging bag go with the hanging bag. Even a stand and a hanging bag is better than the free standing kind.
