Do you feel Kano was Ueshiba's senior?

By Ueshiba, you mean O Sensei - founder of Aikido?

From a technical standpoint, no, I do not. Nor do I believe the other way around.

They journeyed life on different paths, hardly one training the other or competing against the other. Even had they met, neither should be considered the other's senior, except in age. And that - in Asian society - make all the difference. In this respect, of course Kano was the senior. And in any meetings they had, Ueshiba, being 23 years Kano's junior, would have respected Kano as his elder.

So I think neither was the other's senior, any more than either of them are my senior.

As to who was more renowned, I think Kano had a much more profound impact on martial arts than Ueshiba did, and so, my vote goes to Kano.

As to skill, that I think is a thinly veiled attempt to ask who would win over the other. That de-legitimatizes the question, I think.

It is like comparing an apple and an orange. Who here would know just how skilled and knowledgeable either was? My favorite would be Ueshiba. The stories about him from some of his senior students are almost supernatural. When Ueshiba was old a few of the senior students would sneak to his door while he was sleeping and lob tiny pebbles at Ueshiba. They swear that Ueshiba would move his head while he was asleep to dodge the pebbles.

...

Unless you actually trained with him I doubt that you will ever find out for sure. Even opinions on how good a person is varies among practitioners depending on where they put the emphasis. All styles are just huge and encompass so many things it is impossible to be good at all of them.

Not everybody can relate to everybody and people tend to pick the one person they can relate to. I have had teachers who taught things that I was really not very good at whereas others were. I could say the teacher wasn't very good but in all honesty I think it really simply didn't fit me the way it was taught whereas others were OK with it. I found teachers who were able to teach me the very thing eventually so it wasn't the style.

We will never know. I think they were both great martial artist. Both were highly developed as martial artist and great teachers. I think it would be unfair to compare one with the other. I don't know them personally, but I don't think they would want to be compared to one another as who is greater. They both might be honored if you would compare them with each other as far as their accomplishment and to how great they bother were.

I believe they both had their own method and reasons for doing what they did as far as creating their art from the same arts but doing it differently.

Edit:

Yes it is a legit question.

Not in terms of age, but skill? Who was more renowned?

This is not who would win in a fight. This is who was more skilled as a rounded Martial Artist. Who had more insight into Martial Arts in general?
