Do Martial Arts actually work?

No.

The person skilled at using martial arts is what makes it work. It starts with having a good instructor.

Using what I have been taught has helped me and others. I've survived a gun, knife and multiple attacker because of my training. I was speaking a a Ranger today. He talked about the many occasions that he;s used his training in the line of duty and how it has benefited him. I know many others that have used what they have been taught and it has saved their lives.

The martial arts are only good in the hands of the person using them. Just going to a martial arts class will not make every person some awesome fighter. Some might study for years and never be able to defend themselves. But training improves the odd of survival if attacked but only if you train right.

Are you talking about real world applications, street fighting? It can only help. If you don't have heart and can take a pinch or the pressure of the situation then no martial arts diesnt help.

The proper application of a Martial Art is what makes it effective. The levels of effectiveness vary greatly and depend on the individual artist.

But of course, and as mentioned, it's up to the student to make what they learned work.

There have been thousands, if not millions, of people who have successfully defended themselves using their martial arts.

It can make fighting an average joe easy as pie.

No. Only people work. And only people can make martial arts work. If you don't know what you're doing, no martial art in the world will help you.
