Can you compete in KungFu tournaments in a knee brace?

I suggest to see a doctor to make sure she did not do any damage to the knee. Even torn cartilage can turn into a bigger problem if left untreated and can very easily be repaired if caught early.

Knee problems in wushu are common due to the high pressure to pull off the deep stances in competition. A lot of students don't want to train the many long years to open up the hips and develop the deep stances correctly with little strain on the knees so they cut corners and when doing a 'side to side' the knee is not over the foot like it should be, but pulled inward which puts a tremendous strain on the knee and for some people only takes a few years of doing this to mess up their knee.

There are different knee braces on the market. Some offer more support than others. The one that offer more support also limit the flexibility in the knee as the job of a knee brace is to stabilize/immobilize the knee. The best for training wushu are the one's that are just a spandex and just slip on as they still allow mobility. But again check with your doctor to make sure that this is adequate.

She should not compete at all until the knee pain is gone. There is no such thing as good knee pains. Allowing her to compete with a bad knee will only risk further damage to it and give you the opportunity to spend more money on medical care such as orthoscopic surgery on her.

Thanks very much for your reply, Aon.

If you don't mind my asking, what's your background with regard to the question? Are you in healthcare? A martial artist? I'm not trying to undermine you, just trying to get a wider scope. Thanks.

My daughter has a kung fu tournament in a few days. She's complaining of knee pain due to her wushu training. She didn't sprain it or anything - seems wear and tear. Aside from a little practice, she's resting her knee as much as possible.

She still wants to enter the competition. I think I should get her knee braces - but I'm not sure what type to get her so that she can also use in the competition.
