History. I'm a history junkie, and baseball's full of it.
As a game, baseball is just so different from every other sport popular in the US, and is full of so many contrasts. It's simple (hit a ball, run around the bases), yet complex; it's leisurely yet fast-paced; it has graceful finesse, and raw speed and power.
It even parallels American history; based on colonial and English games, many of the first greats were British (George and Harry Wright were sons of a famous cricket player, Harry was born in England, and the original Red Stockings were so good in part because they used cricket strategies they'd learned; and Henry Chadwick had a big influence on baseball history, too). It's always been full of immigrants and sons of immigrants and foreign players, just like the US.
I really get excited when after watching games for 55 yrs. I see something that I have never seen before. examples. kenny loften scoring from 2nd base on a bunt, kenny lofton scoring fro. m 2nd base on a sacrifice fly, kenny lofton scoring from 2 nd base on a passed ball Carlos Baerga hitting a homerun from both sides of the plate in the same inning. Randy Johnson throwing a 97 mph fastball and striking a dove that had flown in front of the plate. noone knew what the hell was going on when the ball appeared to have exploded into a spray of white feathers. Ted Williams hitting a homerin in his last career at bat. Watching a successful execution of the suicide squeeze play. I could go on. How much time do you have?
The efficiency and smoothness of a double play
When the umpire and the manager go nose to nose....lol
The smoothness of a Hanley Ramirez home run swing.
Yasiel Puig running 80 mph to catch the ball way close to the wall and throwing the runner out on third base.
I'm with "el Aguila" . I love the history of the game. I 've been watching baseball for 55 years and I've seen history made and younger people ask me about things that I watched. It's fun to be able to tell them about it, of course with a little embellishment. A-hem. I've just really been into the game, the stats, the bio's and my team for a long time. It's been a great trip. I love the game. Go Red Sox.
The different situations involved in playing baseball.
@demetrice walls: I love that about the Sox as well. I love the fireworks and Nancy Faust, well now Lori Moreland playing Na na na na na na na na hey hey hey good bye on the organ after a home run. The Sox are my favorite team as well.
I love the atmosphere of going to a Sox game, walking through the parking lot to get to the stadium and watching the tailgate party unfolding in the parking lots. Then walking into the stadium and smelling the grilling going on with the polish sausage and onions, some of the best food in baseball ha.
Cracker jacks the smell of the grass the crack off the bat etc. Baseball truly is a american game.
What I like about the Chicago White Sox game, is when the White Sox makes a homerun and when they have the lead. I love the White Sox team. My favorite MLB team!
It's the most complex game ever played......every situation has a different strategy!
The blistering pace.
The skill needed to play efficiently.
just the surprises, the thrill of a home run, lots of things .
