As a point of order, White really had nothing to do with the development of modern MMA. The Unified Rules were in place before Zuffa bought the UFC, and the fighters have developed their skills independently of his input.

White is an aggressive businessman. That's good. He's also terrible at dealing with talent and the media. He has an abrasive personality. He nearly fired the entire American Kickboxing Academy over a minor dispute with Jon Fitch, one that Lorenzo Fertitta cleared up in less than a day. He's used sexist terms when dealing with the media. He behaves more like a bar patron than the face of a company. That's why I personally don't like the guy. I think he's a wannabe tough guy who likes the power he has over ACTUAL tough guys. I think he's cultivated a persona that's detrimental to the public perception of the UFC and MMA in general. Business-wise, the only real objection I have is the fact that he let Pride FC die, but I don't honestly know what sort of difference he could have made, so it's a minor complaint. Yeah, it's almost entirely his personality.
