Which is better Judo or Aikido?

Posted at: 2014-09-13
Hello, I'm 17 y/o male .

I'm kinda short my height is 65.7 inches (about 167 cm).

I want to know which is better for self defence purpose and my height?

Judo is more practical.

In an actual fight, you're extremely likely to wind up in some semblance a standing clinch, which means your attacker will basically "hand you" the throw. You mention your goal as being self-defense. Therefore, the type of person putting you in that position (read: idiotic unskilled "tough guy") will

- Not expect to be thrown

- Have no idea how to defend the throw

- Have no idea how to protect themselves while landing

- Will land..... "awkwardly"

- Will not be doing this landing on a padded mat

Plus, the majority of the throws you will learn rely on getting your hips/center of gravity under that of your attacker, so people your height DO have a natural advantage.

If you are choosing directly between these two styles there are a couple of things to consider. Americanized Judo is primarily a sport and not what I would suggest for defensive purposes. If, however, you have the opportunity to learn the traditional Japanese combat system of Jiu-Jitsu I would go that route as it is more a Hand-to Hand fighting system than Judo has become. It incorporates joint locks and breaks, critical point striking, as well as maiming and crippling techniques. Real combat training.

Aikido is also an effective system and has unique benefits to it's styling in regards to using your opponents movement, momentum, and weight to allow him to be defeated by his own impetus. Aikido is a much softer system than Jiu-Jitsu as it is limited in it's strike training as well.

I personally prefer the system of Krav Maga as it utilizes the most effective techniques from a wide variety of systems including Muay Tai, Jiu-Jitsu (Brazilian as well), traditional boxing, and military style vital point strikes and weapons defenses.

Go to KravMagaAlliance.com/affiliates, to see if there is a school in your area, and check it out for yourself.

I will say that any system you choose should be focused on realism in their training for self-defense. Find one you like and then commit yourself to being the best at it that you can be. Anything you learn can be used to protect yourself if you make yourself aware of how it is applied. If your instructor does not focus on practical application in training you may need to consider a different location.

Neither. You don't choose a martial arts to fit your size. You learn a martial art and adapt it to your size.

Choose the best instructor and you will have the best martial arts for you.

Most of what we say on Yahoo is unfortunately EXTREMELY LIMITED and a GROSS GENERALIZATION of all arts. You choose the best school out of the 2. That's what the best style is. You need to learn real quick that styles don't matter. Otherwise you become a cash cow for someone else's wallet. Ears as holes for their bullshit propaganda mantra on and on and on.

Judo

all martial arts are bad and good in different ways. i would suggest taking a few months of as many martial arts as you can so you can combine al of them and youll have very few ways that people can counter your moves cause youll now alot of styles
