What martial arts do a cop know and do?

What do they know

I've been in police work for 40+ years. It's pretty much as Kokoro says. Most all departments have a set course of "defensive tactics" that they have either adopted or developed themselves. Normally this is written into the "Use Of Force" policy.

Using techniques outside of what is approved and taught is generally prohibited unless it's a life-or-death situation.

Some departments just leave such things up to the individual, and provide little or no training or policy. This leaves them open to lawsuits and prosecution if things go bad.

For instance... The fellow saying there's a police officer he works with who practices JKD. With any local department I'm aware of, JKD techniques would rapidly get you disciplined and most likely indicted....

Most of the stuff we do is wrestling suspects into submission. We do not normally "fight" with people in the terms of a stand-up fight, rather these are "resisting arrest" situations where we are trying to arrest the person, and he/she is trying to get away.

Grappling skills are the most useful.

Police are not required to learn martial arts. They learn a few techniques in their training. But not a complete art. Often it is judo, aikido or one of th forms of jujitsu. Not to be confused with jiu jitsu.

Some individual officer train in any art they choose if they choose.

Mark is right. It varies and they have a se course of defensive tactics. Basic yet effective technique learned in a short amount of time. Most departments teach PPT (pressure point tactics).

Cops should not have to resort to hand to hand combat. It's the last thing on their arsenal and not really included in detaining a suspect to a degree.

They can pretty much learn whatever martial art they want but I guess they would be taught how to use Aikido and Jujitsu in order to be able to hold down or restrain suspects. If they want to learn other styles of martial arts, it will be out of their own pockets though.

What ever they want, if you ask 20 police offers they will give you 20 different answers.

I have seven students that train with me and i teach them shotokan or shito ryu depending upon the class there in,

My partner does tkd another one of my partners does aikido and they are both police officers,

One of my friends does hapikido who is a police office another judo and goju ryu.

Its an individual chose

There's a police officer in my jkd class. I believe he does mma as well with a heavy influence on clinch and throws

mma, eskrima etc
