What is the best recommended MMA discipline to specialise in?

im thinking BJJ and muay thai backup for a nice strategy

My take on the Wrestling/BJJ thing:

I do BJJ and have a High School background of Wrestling (but those skills have become rusted). When sparring MMA against Wrestlers, it's quite a challenge. I would suggest doing both Wrestling and BJJ. As someone said below, add Sambo/Judo/BJJ to Wrestling. While this isn't a bad idea, I wouldn't recommend adding Judo or Sambo over BJJ. The Submission and ground fighting game in BJJ is WAY more in-depth then in Judo or Sambo. In Judo you'll mostly be learning throws more that groundwork (which to dont need because wrestling has great takedowns and no submissions). The same is true with Sambo for the most part, but not the te same extent. Wrestling/BJJ will make you much more versatile. As for specializing, I honestly sit like the idea of it. Muay Thai and BJJ are both amazing arts, but just train both and your specialization will be what you're best at. Become versatile though.

If you have a choice, then go with what you personally feel you will enjoy. Training WILL become a drudgery if you are shooting for pro fighter levels. You might as well enjoy what you are doing along the way. That said, Muay Thai for sure, and wrestling takedowns with Bjj. Find a wrestler, you are bound to know someone who knows one, and work those takedowns and takedown defenses.

Gold medalist wrestlers usually get their asses handed to them when faces a practitioner of submissions. If the wrestler adds Sambo/Judo/BJJ then I totally agree, would be tough to beat.. That being said, I saw some wrestlers early on in the UFC destroy strikers in the octagon.. Beyond Dan Severn.

Whatever works for you is going to be the best option for you. Find a style you like and enjoy yourself doing it then go find someone who teaches something completely different and start learning all over again.

BJJ is good thing and Okinawan Karate and Kajukenbo.
