Should I quit BJJ?

I too had a coach like this. He favored a few students and ignored the rest of us. It sucked and there was never going to be any winning with him. He either liked you or he didn't. I tried to show him my eagerness in wanting to learn and get better. But he could give a sh*t, and I promised myself when I became an instructor, I'd never do that. As for your coaches style, I do not care for teachers that promote based on a minimum time table, or any other junk. All of that is white noise. If you are performing like a purple belt, and beating those at your rank and higher, you should be promoted.

But why quit the art/sport as a whole because you have one bad teacher. If I did that, I would have quit long ago. I had two very bad teachers. But then I found a good one. Quit that school if you feel like you're not getting the attention you deserve and find a place that values all students equally.

Do you like doing what you're doing? That's the real question. Once you answer that, your next step should be obvious. I never spent any time thinking about promotions; I just wanted to learn and practice my skills. That might not be enough for you, but you have to figure out what you want first.

It depends on WHY you're training in "BJJ" in the first place...

Go elsewhere if you have to.

Getting a Black Belt is about Goal setting.

Self Defense is about Self-Defense.

All your arguments sound like those you'd use for quitting that particular facility/instructor, not the martial art itself.

just sign up for the black belt division, wreck your opponent, and get disqualified. The other guy will get the win, but he knows who really won ;)

I don't care much about the thing that holds my gi together, and neither should you.

If your goal is just to be promoted, probably.

You will have to reach brown, and then black, and that will take years.

you need to find another instructor i guess.

I am a BJJ purple belt. I trained pancrase for two years in high school and while in college I started BJJ. I have been doing BJJ for 5 years. My instructor is great but he really favors some students. He seems to promote students he likes, even though they don't compete or even show up often. I show up the majority of the week and won 4 purple belt divisions last year. I don't think he is going to promote me but he is going to promote several of the students I have mentioned. Should I quit?
