Personally, I think fencing would be a pretty cool skill, you know like being able to sword fight and all. But, I also believe MMA is a more practical skill when it comes to self-defense and being able to hold your own out in the real world.
I hope that I was of assistance.
Both are sports. So if you are looking for self defense as a priority you might consider other choices.
Fencing has really solid footwork. Something that is missing in many martial arts. MMA is going to be totally dependent on the teacher and the styles they came from.
Regardless whatever you are taught listen well while being instructed then go think about what you were taught later, after the lesson. Did it make sense. Would it be logical to use to defend yourself? In other words trust then verify.

Yes you can fence. Just stay away from Olympic style fencing bc it does not represent swordsmanship in it's true historical terms.
I am considering a martial arts (or something) and I really don't know which to pursue
MMA is one of the other options and I am considering fencing.
is fencing worthwhile? what can I learn with fencing?
