Open dojo ?

What I would do is visit some of the gyms in your area and ask if they have open workouts or open sparring sessions. Some do and allow people they know to come in for a small fee and train and spar or will let you do this once they know you. If you are really good and know what you are doing they might not even charge you because a person with knowledge, skill, and ability coming in helps their own people training there get better then as well. I can go to several gyms and schools to just catch a workout because the owners, coaches, and instructors know me and know I will also do whatever I can while there working out to help others learn or improve as well.

Montreal is a fairly big metropolitan area and there probably are some schools and gyms that can accommodate you in some ways. If any take you under their wing always keep things positive while there working out and training and always be ready to help others and leave any attitude at home. Also be ready to return the favor if they extend themselves to you by helping them when you can acquiring new business and support them.

I think you need to rephrase the question. Are you looking for a place where you can spar for free while others pay tuition, right? Yeah, don't know of any such places.

First, it isn't fair that you think that it should be the others to pay the bills (rent, utilities, repairs and whatever it takes to keep a dojo open) while you get free training as sparring is part of the training.

Second, noone in their right mind will take on someone who just wants to do as he pleases in their own dojo while they are the ones paying the bills and you contributed absolutely nothing. This would be very disruptive to the students training there. Either you train there or you don't but just come and pick what you want is unacceptable and undermines the training in a dojo. A dojo is structured training and not pick and choose.

Third, people like you are a liability to any dojo as they are not covered by the dojo insurance since they are not really students, just people who want to fight the students. Every owner of a dojo knows that even if you sign a waiver and you get hurt they will be paying for your medical bills out of their own pocket. Should you hurt a student that too would not be covered by their insurance because you are not part of the dojo and again the bill would be footed by the school or worse the teacher.

So you are probably not looking for a dojo.

Should you decide to pay for the use of a facility then you should probably look for a gym with bags. But for the liability reason I doubt there are any gyms that allow sparring. It would just be bag work and shadow boxing.

Edit:

Even the clubs at college don't let you just walk in and spar the students. They have training too and you have to be part of the training. My son belongs to one of those and some are really good but as I said you can not just walk in and do just the sparring only. Often you also have to be a student at that university to become part of the club.

The easiest way is to find if anyone is offering this service on listed ads or in current martial arts places listed by businesses or community centers.

The alternative is to go to some class that focuses on applying fighting techniques, get a relationship with other people there, and then form a study group 1 on 1.

They don't generally advertise open sparring.

Local colleges often have martial arts clubs, as do many recreation centers and YMCA's and the like. They won't usually advertise their activities as much as they advertise themselves, so, you first have to find the center (college, rec center, gyms) and then ask them if they have what you're looking for. Be open about the style, too - you might find a Taekwondo school who knows a Karate school; or an LA Fitness Center personal trainer might know a kickboxing place, etc. Google might not be the best place to start searching, i think.

Sorry. I can't help you. The only help that I can offer is to suggest that you google the martial arts school in your area. Then call around and ask if those school provide what you are desiring. Maybe find ou t how close the can come to what you desire.

Good luck

you can consider starting a group on craigslist and meet at parks

Do you guys know if any sort of open dojos exist ? A place where you could go and sparre and practice without having a scheduled class. I am looking for a way to practice my martial arts during the summer with a summer job that has a changing schedule which means I can work any day.

I'm looking for a place in Montreal city, Canada. What words should I search on google for that ? I can't manage to find one...
