Need help finding JKD training center?

Bruce lee is turning in his grave. JKD is not a martial art or a style. It is a philosophy (and a damn good one at that)

Bruce didnt actually want to name JKD because he knew people would confuse it with a style

If you find a club which claims to teach JKD as a style you are probably learning kung fu from a guy whos trying to get more students by riding on the back of Bruce Lees name

i would suggest buying Brucies book The Tao of JKD (a collection of his notes, musings and diagrams) it is well worth a read! and he explains what i just wrote better than i ever could

KW, I don't know any JKD place that trains forms.

Anyway, not to be a smartass, but a Google search got me lots of places. Seems like it would have been easier. Except, well, now *I'm* making it easier. Here are some of the schools that popped up when I typed "JKD Philadelphia" into the search engine:

http://www.roguemartialarts.com/

http://www.phillyselfdefense.net/

http://tacticaljkd.com/

http://chambersvaletudo.com/vale-tudo-se...

Just glancing over that, it appears that some of the teachers may have instructed one another.

Anyway, in regards to weight training in MMA, it depends on the school. Most of the MMA schools/gyms I've been to don't have much in the way of workout equipment. Because, you know, they're using their space to teach people how to fight. Some did have some rudimentary equipment (a bench or rack, kettlebells, etc) but that's not the focus. If you want big biceps to brag about to your boy, start doing pull-ups, or fill a milk jug with sand and do curls. If you want to learn how to fight, then go to a martial arts gym.

You probably won't find anyone teaching JKD directly from Bruce Lee in that area. You will find many in the JKD concepts in the area but nothing like what Bruce Lee taught.

You will find, and should probably avoid, the ones pushing Kali and Phillipino martial arts. They would probably also be highlighting that they train navy seals and loads of law enforcement officers. That is a trick used by Paul Vunak. From them you learn basically the same as MMA gyms teach.

If they are not directly linked to Bruce Lee through Jerry Poteet or Ted Wong move along and find a good MMA gym.

The ones who say use what is useful and bla bla bla have not been taught by 1st generation (original) students of Bruce Lee. That is only a small part of what he said and is used to market themselves as JKD schools to make $$$ as is being lead by Dan Inosanto who actually is an original student but does not teach Bruce Lees JKD, he teaches His idea of what he wants it to be. Many of his ideas were dismissed by Bruce when he was alive. One big one is Kali.

My parents allowed me to choose my own martial art for self defense, I have been doing Kung Fu but it wan't for me.

So I found out that the famous IP man did wing chun but i don't like the whole forms things, until I heard that Bruce lee made his own martial art, after learning wing chun from IP man ( although i knew he did wing chun, and was a good fighter).

I check the history of JKD and its exactly what i want problem is i live in Philly and I can't seem to find any good place to start training at.

SO if you can help me find a place in center city, Philadelphia, where they teach people JKD, I would appreciate it!

Thanks
