Muay Thai or Kung Fu for Self-Defence?

Thai boxing is a sport....which practices limited attacks and some areas being off limits.

Chinese boxing ("kung fu" simply means professionalism) is a martial art designed for self defense....

It really is that simple.

I currently take muy thai and I love it. It has put me in great physical and mental condition. Both are great for self defense, but I personally think muy thai is great. And remember, the instructor is the most important thing to look into, because without a good instructor, it'd be nearly impossible to learn.

Just the experience of training with a different kind of fighter will make your skills and knowledge more usable. Train with whichever one has the better school but visit them both for a practice lesson and some sparring before you decide which school is actually better.

Self Karate.

Both of them are sports and the real versions of kung fu don't really work unless everyone else is training nothing, poor, under fead,un educated and frail. Mauy Thai is good for self defence and will make you more well rounded then a average sport striker and you'll learn ?imted ground work but no real self defence ever just stuff you can use to defend yourself. San shauo is like the best of both worlds between mauy Thai, kung fu and wrestling no self defence in that either but it's another option.

I spent years studying Kung Fu. I now study Muay Thai. Muay Thai is the more direct fighting style and I would pick it any day of the week for effectiveness. That isn't to say I don't like King Fu, but Kung Fu is more if a lifestyle of hard work than a fighting art.

I have practiced Kung Fu before, and it has worked for self defence with no problems, but I have the opportunity to train Muay Thai under a man who has been trained in Thailand, and won a world championship once.

This is what has me wondering, should I go for it? I am very comfortable with Kung Fu because I know it well, but it sounds like a rather good opportunity.

How good is Muay Thai for self defence?
