It would depend on the dog. If it was a pit bull or a fighting breed they should prevail An average run of the mill dog the man should be able to win. People are intimidated by dogs. I have experienced standing up to a regular dog and they will back down. The worst thing to do is run because the instinct of the dog says chase it and catch it. People and animals I believe generally do not want to fight. No good normally can come out of it.
