Jiu jitsu and Faster punches and kicks?

Actually John is not entirely correct. He is correct that you are limited in what you can train without a partner however there are still many drills and things you can do at home by yourself that will help your Jiu Jitsu.

Personally there are many different types of shrimping, bridging, hip rotation, transition and sit out drills that work beautifully by yourself. The more you drill these the better your Jiu Jitsu will get. You can also get yourself a Grappling dummy to practice on as well as practice drilling against a pole or boxing bob. You can practice shrimping out and rotating into turtle and various other positions. All of this will help your skills and help the body to begin to build muscle memory.

Nothing beats training with people to build your skills but there are still many skills you can do individually to improve your movement and transitions.

Here is a video that will get you started.

Shaeek gave you some good pointers. But like KW mentioned, drills and self practice are only so much. JJ is a two person martial art, like all martial arts, and you need another person to test you, spar with you, and push you to your limits.

You can train on a "non live" dummy for years, but how are you gonna react when a real adversary takes you down and starts pummeling your face? You will have the very, very, basics of training, and chances are, you will not perform well.

As for reflex and speed and punches:

There are many, many, different things you can do, but with out another person there to help you out, your options are limited.

If you have a heavy bag, start punching it as hard as you can, as fast as you can for 30 seconds. Rest 30 seconds. Repeat. Do this until muscle failure.

Put wrist weights on. Punch bag as hard and as fast as possible for 15 seconds. Rest 15 seconds. Repeat. Do until muscle failure.

Kicks just take more practice. Pretty much the same drill as the first.

If you have a friend, practice reflex drills. Also if you have a friend, try the following:

Take your martial arts belt, or just a belt in general. Fold it into 4ths (for the martial arts belt) or in half for a regular. Bend it at the middle so it makes an opening in the belt.

Object of game is to punch through the middle of the belt before your friend snaps it shut.

This works on your speed and your friends reaction time. Switch every so often.

You can't train jiu jitsu or any grappling art by yourself. How exactly would you do that? Who're you going to do the techniques on? It would look kind of ridiculous someone doing a triangle choke by himself with his legs up in the air.

To increase speed lift weights. High reps of lower weight will build speed and stamina.

Shadow boxing, heavy bag, speed bag, will also improve your speed and reflexes.

The video shaeeck offered looks helpful too.

How can I train in jiu jitsu by myself? I go to class occasionally but I want practice by myself as well. Also any good tips to get faster punches and kicks, and reflexes over all? Any answers helps, thanks.
