Is jeet kune do effective for real situations?

Is it good or not practical?

Jeet Kune Do is a just a criteria per se. It's a philosophy and not a style. The only reason why you see people teaching styles is because either those are the JKD in action that the late Bruce Li taught them or it's THEIR version of JKD in action.

When it comes to MMA people think of Pankration because it have boxing and wrestling but the thing is it's NOT mixed martial arts. Pankration is a system on it's own that emphasis on striking and wrestling so you won't see any sophisticated techniques from Chinese, Japan, Etc, such as the hip thrust. You can say that martial arts for them was at it's primal stage. Just look at China, Chinese gong-fu started to flourish around the Ming dynasty.

I can understand the difficulties in applying this philosophy because many think that having a teacher is a dogma. So without someone from an authoritative position telling you what to do you're not sure of yourself how to tackle your way through. If you apply the JKD concept YOU DON'T NEED A TEACHER. You only need examples from individuals in different styles to learn from them.

Your question is......is it practical? If you think taking techniques from different styles and using what works for you is a bad thing then I don't know what to say. Come up with the conclusion yourself.

Jeet Kune Do is practical, but finding someone who can incorporate it correctly is the real question.

Jeet Kune Do is a philosphy not a style, as will hopefully be pointed out by other users here. Like any self defense situation, having a knowledgeable teacher is the most important element.
