Is 20 late to get a black belt in TKD?

Just wondering...

Are you serious?

I started in Uechi Ryu much older than that and earned my black belt. And Uechi takes longer than many arts.

So the serious answer is that in any art if you're serious and keep working you can earn it.

Well...depends when you started.

It's not about the time you spend. You can spend a lot of years trying to get to black belt but it comes down to the training. The quality. How often do you train? How long do you train? Who trains you?

There was a guy I studied Hapkido under for about a month. His name is Kyuchin Hwang. Has an 8th degree black belt under Taekwondo, 9th under Hapkido and Judo. The guy has been studying MA for about 60+ years. I recall him saying that it took him about 15 years to reach black belt in TKD. Being from the earlier years of Taekwondo's history and being a commando in the South Korean Army, I'd have to imagine that it was very difficult training and I can see, from under his instruction, that the level of diligence and precision that he tried to instill in his students had to have come from his training under his instructor. He was a no joke kind of dude and while some may say that it's a joke that he had to wait that long, it was well earned.

Ultimately it's relative. If you start off at 25 and make black belt at 27...depending on how tough and correct the training was, I would say that's very premature. But if you started at, say, 13, and made black at 28...then I'd imagine you had a lot of training to go through and good one at that. It's not late. It's never too late.

Where do you live? If you are in any country in the west you can get a TKD black belt within a few months. That should tell you the value of TKD.

20 is late if you are comparing it to the many day care centers that have mostly little kids and promote them to black belt for money. However, in any legitimate school 20 is often a bit young. Many people that start training in the late teens are well into their 20's by the time they receive a black belt.

The Koreans borrowed the uniforms and belt rank system from the way the Japanese and Okinawans did things. The Japanese and Okinawans generally don't consider children as serious students. They rarely if ever promote children to black belt. In fact the traditional standards state that the minimum age for anyone to even be considered for black belt is 16 years of age. That is reflected in the way things were here in the U.S during the 1960's when I began my training. In the late 60's or early 1970's Black Belt Magazine published a large survey they conducted of many martial arts schools of any style. They said that less than 3% of all students ever reached their first black belt. Since there were no children allowed in most schools there were no children black belts. Of the few adults that made it to their first degree black belt it was common for them to spend no less than 3 years of training. However, that was rare. Many spent 4 or 5 years reaching 1st dan. Many I know spent 7 to 10 years before reaching their first black belt. My first black belt came only after nearly 8 years of serious training.

Black Belt Magazine also stated that of the less than 3% of the students that reached 1st degree black belt less than 50% of them ever made it to 2nd degree black belt. If you do the math they were saying that less than 3 out of 100 students ever made it to black belt and less than 1/2 of them reached second degree black belt.

...

Takes about 4-5 Years based on how fast of a learner you are. 3 years if you have a martial arts background and good discipline.

Nah bro it's a good age to start training, just dont buy into the bull$hit that is on offer out there, go try some out, do a bit of homework of the school and instructors before you make your final decision.

Why would it be? You have all age ranges in the marital arts from kids to senior citizens. Why are you people so hung up on ages?\

Where does it say you have to be |X to start training or to reach a certain rank?

No, but it is too late for you to learn Hokuto Shinken! Gotta start at young age like 3 or 7 year old.

It only takes a few years, so no.

all you need is $600

Just wondering...
