I Have A Couple Of Questions About Knife Throwing?

It depends on the knife.

There are three types of throwing knifes:

Blade heavy knives: the blade is heaviest part so you hold the handle.

Handle heavy knives: the handle is the heaviest part so you hold the blade.

Balanced throwing knives: the knife is the same weight throughout the whole thing: you and throw it by handle or blade.

The handle heavy and the blade heavy knifes generate the most power, but less accurate. It is used in short distances.

The balanced knifes has a bit less power but its good for long ranged throws.

For the how you throw part. It doesn't matter, which ever one you are generate the most power with. The thing is getting the spins right, only practice can make you better.

Those are copies of a style of knife that were originally marketed under the name, "silver arrows". They are a reasonably good design, and they are meant to be thrown by the handle.

(any double-edged blade is meant to be handle-thrown.

Now....I've been throwing knives since about 1965... so I do have a little experience. However, rather than tediously writing out everything which would take an hour..... Let me give you two resources.

First one, "The Great Throwzini"

http://www.throwzini.com/

This is a dedicated throwing site with lessons, books, videos, knives, etc. Should be almost everything you need.

Next, the sub-Reddit group, r/throwing:

http://www.reddit.com/r/throwing/

Which is pretty active as well and has a lot of nice videos and such.

Good luck. And... Build a good backstop.

I've thrown knives and when it comes down to it, you just have to practice and go with what works for you. You also will likely have to try many different knives in order to find one that has good balance and weight.

Is it a good idea to start out throwing sharpened knives? Seems like a bad idea

Okay so I have never thrown a knife in my life, so I am a noob at this. So I was just hoping if someone on here could help me out a little. First question is how should I stand the first time throwing my knife. Should my feet be facing the target or should my feet be turned toward the side. Also some people on YouTube say you should hold the knife as if it was a pencil, and some say to hold it in the palm of your hand. I bought this knife set by the way.

Should I grip it by the blade or by the handle? I just want to know what is the correct way of holding a knife basically. Do I hold the knife lightly or do I grip it really tight? Also does anybody know if the knives I bought have a actual name? Are they just nameless knives? I'm also going to make my own target. What is the best wood to use? Anyways, if you could help a noob out I would really appreciate it. ^_^
