How long does it take to master a martial art?

It depends on the martial art. One particular style of Shaolin Kung Fu like Tiger, Dragon, Mantis, Snake, or Crane can take half a lifetime to master. Aikido or Brazilian Jiu Jitsu can take about 10 years. You don't have to "master" a martial art in order to be a formidable fighter. In fact there are martial arts grandmasters who would get their butts handed to them if they stepped into a cage with a much younger, less experienced fighter.

There is no precise answer. Different martial arts have differing levels of complexity, different people have differing levels of natural talent and so some people end up having to work harder towards it than others. This being said, you are talking YEARS of training. This being said though when you say 'master' do you mean to learn and be able to apply as much as is humanly possible or do you mean having a practical understanding and ability to apply what you know? Your ability to defend yourself and apply what you now will likely come quickly, but you could spend a life time studying and still not learn everything there is to learn.

Master, shihan, sifu, etc. are titles other may apply to one however, one knows the reality: i.e., that there is always something to learn, some what or something that one must adapt to...

Such is a life long journey that has no end and only a fool listens to those who pour honeyed accolades into one's ears.

One may become proficient and competent as well as reaching a high level of understanding at the deepest level however, as O Sesnei, Ueshiba correctly stated, one is always a beginner and each day is a new reality.

Wakarimasu, tomodachi?

No one ever really becomes a master... it's all in the journey, there is no destination. As you become proficient, you may teach a few here and there... they will consider you their master, but one really never stops learning martial arts.

I will never master an art ... In my opinion a master is someone who mastered an art and is perfect .. There's always room for improvement in the arts so by my definition you will never master a art cuz u always can improve

What is a master to you? The definition of a master is different for everybody. The requirements for each style to be a master are different. Does master mean you have learned all there is to learn and have stopped learning? If that is the case then noone is a master because that would mean you are perfect if there is nothing left for you to learn and we all know perfection is not possible. So if a master can be less than perfect how much less before you stop calling him a master?

Internal fighting arts generally take longer because they are much more difficult to master. To become a high level in Tai Chi, it's not uncommon for it to take 20 years.

Depends. In general a long, long, long, time.

For others not so long at all.

In curious words "Only forever, not long at all"...

BUT: In my opinion there is no such thing as "master". There is always more to learn.

master meaning very good at probably a year

with the proper devotion and attitiude ,ive always said someone like

michael jordan would take a year to develop the proper attributes and skillset with

his athletism but then again how many are like him?

It depends if you actually have any talent. Many people could practise from now until doomsday and would never master anything.

A lifetime.

If it is at all possible it would take a lifetime.
