Elbows in street fight?

Are elbows effective in the street? Are they hard enough? Or are hooks to the face better?

If you're close in, I'd recommend the elbow to be honest.

"But Harry! You're a boxer! How can you speak down on your own sport?!"

I'm not speaking down. Most people, boxers included, don't have well conditioned hands. Mike Tyson broke a few bones in his hand after a street fight, punching old Mitch Green.

Unless you know how to punch properly, you know WHERE to punch properly and your hands are good condition, I wouldn't punch to the face in a street-fight. Sure, things can go well, but they can also go very, very badly. Loads of boxers have had to put their careers in the drawer after street fights by seriously damaging their hands.

In a street fight, the only place for hooks is to the body. Body hooks are devastating, and they do affect the legs if they're done in succession and hard enough... making it all the easier for you to run the f*ck away.

EDIT: My bad, you most like won't have time to see the effect of body punches in a street fight. Regardless, hooks to the body are extremely painful and work well in disabling your opponent.

Depends. If you are close in they are better than a hook to the face. If you are too far away to reach with the elbow the hook is better. If you are behind your opponent then an elbow strike is better than trying to get to the front of your opponent to throw a hook in his face. There is no ABC in fighting and no one technique that does it all. That's why you learn many.
