Does martial arts build muscle?

I'm just wondering before I decide to take classes .. I don't want to build muscle .. what are things I shouldn't do ?

@etakk- your wrong. That kind of routine u described is more gear toward powerlifting aka NOT muscle building (you will build muscle- but not alot) but more toward pure strength. Theres a reason why there is a thing called 'bodybuilding' and a thing called 'powerlifting.' I know this b/c ive done both.

@gary: he has it right.

Im sure martial arts does build SOME muscle but not a lot. I can guess its similar to powerlifting in the sense that itll teach you to be more explosive with your movements. IF it did build muscle, you wouldnt see people lifting weights in the weight room anymore lol or people like GSP who trains 7days a week would be the size of brock lesnar by now.

Im assuming your a girl, that being said, you will never be able to build the amount of muscle a guy does so you will never look manly. If you wanted to look 'manly' by building a sh*t ton of muscle youd REALLY have to try to go for that look (and that would take years) cuz the average female body doesnt produce nearly enough testosterone to build enough muscle. the average MALE can only pack on 5-10lbs of pure muscle a YEAR...thats not a lot, now imagine how lil you could pack on as a female who produces a fraction of the amount of testosterone as a male..***:D

What do you mean by "build muscles"? If you meant developing big bulky muscles like a pro-weightlifter, then the answer is no. If you mean strong healthy muscles, yes for some specific ones such as the legs, triceps, and core muscles. You are not going to look like Mr. Universe just by doing martial art.

Besides, as a girl you don't have the male hormone testosterone which what gives guys who lift weights the bulk.

It's the best way of keeping your muscle strengthening through hard exercise.

Amanda/Cathy, don't do martial arts if you don't want to build muscles. See answers here:

don't do weight training.

martial arts itself works out the muscles.you will be toned but not masculine.

most martial arts will tone your muscles not build them,

Yes, it does.
