Yes it is. It is a completely feasable to use in a self defense scenario. Only sports fighting has rules, self defense is governed by only one rule and that is survival at all costs. If this means you need to bite someone then so be it.

I don't know if there is a general term for it in all of martial arts but filipino martial arts have a term for it called kinamotay. But it's more in reference to fighting dirty than just biting.
