Can anyone explain UFC to me?

The UFC is the top Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) promotion in the world.

MMA is a sport where fighters can attack each other with kicks, punches, knee and elbow strikes, throws, tackles, chokes, and locks on the major joints, most commonly the elbow, shoulder, knee, and ankle. Striking (hitting) is allowed on the feet, in the clinch, and on the ground.

Banned techniques include attacking the eyes, spine, or groin, hitting the back of the head, bending the fingers and toes, or throwing kicks, stomps, and knees at the head of an opponent who is considered "down" (touching the ground with anything but their feet).

In the US, the fights are conducted under the Unified Rules. Under those rules, regular matches are three 5-minute rounds, while championship fights (fights for a title belt) are five 5-minute rounds; the UFC, as an organization, also holds five-round fights for the "main event" (main/last fight) of all of their cards (shows), even if they aren't for a title.

There are three judges who score the fight based on a "ten point must" system, meaning that a winner is decided for each round, and that winner MUST receive ten points, while the loser gets fewer points, most often nine. The most common score for a round is 10-9, where the winner got ten points and the loser got nine; the most common scores for a three-round fight are 30-27 (one fighter won all three rounds) or 29-28 (one fighter won two out of three rounds). The fights are judged based on effective striking, effective grappling, aggression, and area (ring/cage) control. Functionally, the guy who lands the cleaner shots and/or held the top position on the ground for the longest time will probably win the match.

Fighters preparing for MMA study two or more martial arts. Common martial arts include Western boxing, which focuses on punches; Muay Thai, which includes punches, kicks, and knee and elbow strikes from the clinch; Taekwondo, which is known for its kicks; Greco-Roman wrestling, which is known for its clinch throws; "collegiate" wrestling, known for its tackles and pinning; Judo, known for throws and foot sweeps from the clinch, as well as arm locks; Sambo, known for a variety of throws, as well as leg locks, and Brazilian Jiujitsu, known for ground fighting, including chokes and joint locks, as well as fighting from the "guard", a position where one fighter is on their back and has trapped their opponent between their legs.

The UFC has several weight classes:

Heavyweight: Cain Velasquez (champion), Frank Mir, Junior Dos Santos, Fabricio Werdum

Light Heavyweight: Jon Jones (champion), Alexander Gustafsson, Daniel Cormier, Rashad Evans

Middleweight: Chris Weidman (champion), Anderson Silva, Vitor Belfort, Lyoto Machida

Welterweight: Johnny Hendricks (champion), Robbie Lawler, Rory McDonald, Tyron Woodly

Lightweight: Anthony Pettis (champion), Ben Henderson, Gilbert Melendez, Khabib Nurmagomedov

Featherweight: Jose Aldo (champion), Chad Mendez, Frankie Edgar, Cub Swanson

Flyweight: Demetrious Johnson (champion), John Dodson, Ian McCall, Joseph Benavidez

They will also be adding a Women's Strawweight division before the end of the year, I think.

here ill explain so its easy to understand....

ufc is the NAME of the top mma fighting organization. MMA stands for MIXED MARTIAL ARTS...

mixed martial arts is exsackly what it says mixed martial arts.. you can fight using all kinds of martial arts and fighting styles... the top martial arts most mma ( mixed martial arts fighters ) use is , boxing, muey thai, kickboxing, karate, judo, wrestling, Brazilian jijitsue, ect...you can do whatever u want, but there are certaint things you cannot do.

there are two fighters who fight in a cage, there are three rounds each round five minutes, if It is a championship fight ( fighting for the number 1 belt) then its a longer fight. 5 rounds of 5 minutes.. you win by beating your opponiant, you either knock them out, make them quit or after the time is up if no one is knocked out or quit then 3 judges basically decide who they think won the fight. the winner is basically the one who got the better of it lol...

if a fighter quits he will TAP OUT, this indicates he quits.. to tap out u simply tap the ground or your opponaint and the fight is over and you lose..

that's basically the basics... heres highlights from the ufc, notice how they are using many fighting styles in one ( punches, kicks, knees, wrestling, choking ect... ) that's where they get the name mixed martial arts!

Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) is to the UFC what:

Basketball is to the NBA

Football is to NFL

Hockey is to NH

Baseball is to MLB

UFC is a fight promoting organization through which the biggest mma fights are facilitated.

What do you mean "the top fighters"? What don't you understand?

I'm trying to get into UFC, but I don't really understand it. If someone could give me a detailed explanation of how it works, the top fighters, etc. I would really appreciate it.
