Can a walking stick be good for self defense?

So..

I recently bought this system http://www.goobypls.com/r/rd.asp?gid=563... It teaches how to protect yourself and your family in case of violent situations or unexpected attacks from thiefs. Sometimes having a gun is just not enough.

Anything would help for example walking stick, cane or umbrella.

Imagine an eye getting poked out with the end of an closed umbrella, you could also use the opposite end to hook a leg.

Always be creative and use anything as a weapon.

Knowing the basics is not the same thing as being fairly good. Basics are just that and being able to apply any weapons technique requires more than basic level.

Being able to defend against multiple assailants requires more than competency in weapon techniques. It requires very good situational awareness, fleet of foot, and very good tactics.

A walking stick is not going to help you against a gun. Did you really need to ask?

Yes.

Yes it can.

It can be used to keep an attacker at distance or if held across the forearm used as defence against a stick or similar striking object.

The handle can be used to unbalance an attacker at the leg or pull his head toward you for a strike.

You can disarm a knife attacker from distance with a walking stick (by striking the hand with the handle part of the stick)

And of course the stick can be used to strike sensitive parts of the body such as he knees elbows eyes and wrists etc

Ofcourse

Having a walking stick and knowing how to use it can help if you need it for self defense. It is one a few things that you can carry anywhere.

Maybe.

Yes. Since the dawn of humankind, people have been fighting with sticks. In more modern times, a number martial arts incorporate stick fighting with 3 to 5 foot walking sticks or canes. The French have La Canne (cane fighting often taught with Savate), the Japanese have Jo-Do, Bojutsu, and Hanbojutsu (stickfighting), the British have Bartitsu, the Irish still fight with the sheleighly (club), and Hapkido from Korea features cane fighting. Just about every country in the world has "some" stick fighting tradition somewhere in its history.

.

This is assuming you are fairly good at using it and know the basic techniques, and there are no other means of a weapon around you. Could it ward off a perpetrator or two? Is it likely you'll survive with it if the criminal had a gun?

Depends how long it is and what material. I suggest a bamboo one might seem efficient enough but a thicker material will intimidate them.

Plus, for a bonus, attaching a blade to the end of it will scare them right out of the door.
