Boxing or MMA?

Posted at: 2014-09-13
I started out as a boxer and moved on to MMA. Personally I don't think you can combine those two together. Boxing in MMA is not the same as boxing in boxing. You do not go to boxing class and use what you've learned there in MMA. It's completely different - the movement, the headmovement, the blocking and so on. Money wise boxing is better. The top earning boxers earn many, many times more than the top earning MMA fighters. And I'll think that will continue for the time being.

As for having it as a career. I think anyone with more than 2 IQ points will tell you it's a $hitty career choice. It's basically on the same level as someone saying that they want to be a musical artist, an actor or playing in the NFL. The thing in MMA and boxing is that there is no middle road. Either you are a poor, struggling fighter or you are a superstar. There is no one who makes a decent living. It's either huge or nothing.

So what is your plan B? What happens if and when you fail? You want to go for it? Go ahead, you go for it. But remember that 99,99% of everyone that tries fails. So the odds are not in your favor.

If it were me I would continue to train in both but for a professional career I would go for mma. If you continue to train in both you will be a more well rounded fighter. Not to mention the skills you will gain by combining both.

Before I get started, I want to clear something up, I am not a fanboy of either sport, I actually love both. So, this question isn't about which one is better, but about which one sounds like a better career for me. I apologize for the length of the question in advance.

I am 14 years old, 5'4 and 147 pounds, I am very stocky(not fat) and in good shape. I've had experience in both sports, I trained MMA(Boxing, BJJ, Muay Thai) for about a year until June(I moved to a different city), regardless, MMA is pretty big in my family. On the other hand, Boxing is big in my family as well, both my uncle and my father were great amateurs back in their days. Besides that, both of them began teaching me how to box when I was much younger, so Boxing is also part of my knowledge. Onto other matters, there are plenty of places to train either Boxing or MMA at where I live(Miami, FL) so that won't be an issue. As you guys can see, I am having some trouble figuring out which sport I want to start a career in and possibly become a professional of. So, can you guys please tell me which sport would be a better choice in my situation? I appreciate your answers.
