Athletic training vs Exercise Science?

What is the difference between majoring in athletic training and exercise science? Because it seems like they are very similar.

A major in athletic training is geared completely toward a career as a CSCS. The guys you see on the field stretching NFL guys out before the game, and running onto the field to respond to an injury--the overwhelming majority of them are CSCS's. My advisor in college was one of them for a period in his career.

Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialists (CSCSs) are professionals who apply scientific knowledge to train athletes for the primary goal of improving athletic performance. They conduct sport-specific testing sessions, design and implement safe and effective strength training and conditioning programs and provide guidance regarding nutrition and injury prevention. Recognizing that their area of expertise is separate and distinct, CSCSs consult with and refer athletes to other professionals when appropriate.

A degree in exercise science is a less detailed degree that does not require the constant recertification that a CSCS degree does. On the other hand, many people often go on from a bachelor's degree in exercise science to a master's degree in physiology, or physical therapy, sports rehab, sports medicine, orthopedic medicine, general medicine (MD), or many other careers.

So yes, they are similar, and involve many of the same core classes. But someone that understands what a CSCS is always wants to remain (and enjoy being)a CSCS, while someone gettinga degree in exercise science has more career flexibility.

I hope this helps.

Good Luck to ya!.***:D

As far as I know, there are no college degrees programs titled "athletic training" or "exercise science". There is, however, degree programs for kinesiology which among several other things teaches how to exercise properly, strength conditioning, biomechanics, etc.

never heard of a degree in "athletic training" before. you don't need either to get a cscs. you just need to have a bachelor's degree and pass the cscs exam.
